I will be traveling to Springfield on Wednesday to watch the Springfield Cardinals and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. The pitching matchup should be an interesting one with Brian Broderick (2007, 21st round from Grand Canyon University) facing off with Michael Montgomery (2008, 1S round from Hart High School, CA). Broderick has had a strong season posting an 8-2 record in the Texas League while posting a 3.20 ERA in 12 starts. Broderick will turn 23 one week from start date.
The real reason I’m traveling to Springfield is to watch Kansas City Royals phenom Michael Montgomery pitch. Reports have Montgomery anywhere from 90-94 with a very good curve and changeup. Montgomery is often referred to in the discussion for the Royals number one prospect. I will have a complete breakdown of Michael Montgomery’s mechanics and anything else I can get from the MiLB pitchers of the Royals organization. I will also get a chance to watch Eric Hosmer play first base and swing his powerful left-handed stick.
